As I mentioned last week, I have been recording my work process while working on a new kart asset for Zero Gear. Here is the video that resulted. It was a pain in the ass to make but hopefully it will be interesting to some people. The video covers modeling and texturing the kart, although I did edit out some of the really boring parts like UV-mapping. Watch me build this from scratch:
The software used in the video are Maya 8.5 and Photoshop CS3. It was captured over about 15 hours of work.

Looks good, can you work at the speed in realtime
Which recording software did you use in the end?
No, that is sped up quite a bit
I ended up using a program called SnagIt, it had pretty good support for time-lapse stuff. A lot of the other programs I tried had issues messing with maya’s viewport rendering.
Nice small tank
If you don’t make it, we will!!!
@Jeff Too slow!!
Haha, we have been wanting to do a tank kart for a while. I could never figure out how we could make the treads work with our current system but Dave figured out a good way.
Wow, it was interesting to see how much detail goes into making something like that. Thanks for sharing.
Fastest AO bake… ever!
haha.. good work, as always. I think I’m going to put this on my blog. It will be a nice update from my first post on you guys.
@Brenden Let us know if you do
Alright, post is up! Have a great weekend guys.
Cheers!

Wait a sec.. going back to my AO comment, it looks like a separate application was used for the bake. If so, what was it?
the application is called xNormal: http://www.xnormal.net/
Really? I had xNormal once but deleted it because I never used it. I thought it was like crazy bump. I didn’t know you could do AO bakes too. I gotta check that out again. Is it better and faster than Maya’s AO? I have Maya 2009.
